Purpose of the Event
Japan is located in a climate zone where heavy rains caused by typhoons and rainy seasons occur frequently, and has long suffered from frequent mountain disasters. To adapt such environment, Japan has developed and applied Forest-based Disaster Risk Reduction (F-DRR) technique that utilizes the functions of forests and trees to reduce the occurrence of mountain disasters. There is increasing international interest in using ecosystem functions as nature-based solutions (NbS). F-DRR is expected to be an effective climate change adaptation measure as NbS in developing countries by implementing it in upstream of river basins at relatively low cost. Since FY2020, FFPRI has been researching and developing with the aim of supporting the international deployment of F-DRR technologies by the private sector in Japan.
This year's international seminar aims to discuss the importance of utilizing the multifaceted functions of forests especially disaster risk reduction in regional development, based on the trend towards mainstreaming NbS. Presenters will share the importance of forest and land use planning that considers F-DRR and the issues involving local communities to such initiatives in developing countries. We hope that the discussions based on these presentations followed by a panel discussion will lead to the formation of regional development projects including F-DRR component and increase the number of participants to such projects.
